Everyday we encounter veterans struggling to make ends meet. The Charles George Veterans Hospital was recently nationally recognized as being ranked #1 for patient satisfaction (Asheville Citizen-Times Article here) and is attracting more homeless veterans. The Asheville VA is doing a remarkable job along with ABCCM and Homeward Bound however the demands exceed efficient capacity. We are looking to the private sector to fill-in the gaps in services. Here is a list of current needs:

  • Are you a woman with a spare room in your house? Homeless female veterans (with and without children) need safe temporary housing. Current shelters harbor a high volume of negative factors such as substance abuse, gang activity and unsafe conditions for homeless female veterans, especially with children. Currently, Asheville has no shelter for female veterans. Contact Alyce Knaflich with Aura Home Women Vets (912) 484-6316 and learn how to get involved http://aurahomewomenvets.org/
  • Are you a Landlord? We need low income housing (individually owned homes or apartments) owners who are willing to accept HUD-VASH (Section 8 Vouchers for veterans). After a bit a paperwork the Asheville Housing Authority sends you the rent check on behalf of the veteran. Contact AHA to sign-up then enroll with Charles George Veterans Administration Hospital Social Services to interview disabled veteran tenant prospects and call 828-298-7911 Ext. 5335
